Anyone using ZIGBEE?
« on: January 21, 2008, 11:50:32 PM »
share kayo ng inyong experience about Zigbee
I wish for this night-time to last for a lifetime
The darkness around me
Shores of a solar sea
Oh how I wish to go down with the sun
Sleeping
Weeping
With you

I walk alone
Every step I take
I walk alone
My winter storm
Holding me awake
It’s never gone

I fear that soon you'll reveal
Your dangerous mind
As your true colours show
A dangerous sign

ZigBee:
Very low duty cycle, very long primary battery life,
Static and dynamic star and mesh networks, >65,000 nodes, with low latency available,
Ability to remain quiescent for long periods without communications,
Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum allows devices to sleep without the requirement for close synchronization.

Bluetooth:
Moderate duty cycle, secondary battery lasts same as master,
Very high QoS and very low, guaranteed latency,
Quasi-static star network up to seven clients with ability to participate in more than one network,
Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum is extremely difficult to create extended networks without large synchronization cost.

para sa akin mas maganda yung frequency hopping spread spectrum... kaya im still looking forward to base my future designs sa bluetooth. pero ok yung mesh networking sa zigbee kaso nga lang di ko din siya magagamit...

what I want to experiment next is with Nordic transceivers (uses frequency hopping).. kaya lang walang available sa atin

I bet Zigbee is just starting to invade the philippines, need upgrades pa sa mga equipments

look at this link:http://itp.nyu.edu/~raf275/meshnetworking/XBee/XBee_example.html
parang intersting at madali lang di ba? hehehe

i will try to purchase zigbee oem modules... siguro by summer. I am to use it in my project.  kwentuhan ko kayo...

By the way, yang zigbee module na pinakita dyan, $19 lang. sa tingin ko, mura yan... di ba? :)

BTW, Zigbee is not an alternative to Bluetooth...

designed for industrial environments ang Zigbee for equipments only needing small data rates...

typical usage in Industry, wireless buttons, and controls...

TI have a similar, but free to use, protocol...SimpliciTI using MSP430 and Chipcon Transceivers...

Microchip also has MiWi.
It's a free Zigbee alternative without its complexity and licensing.
BTW, Zigbee has no definite standard yet, so virtually no interoperability between manufacturers unlike Bluetooth.

that is true... you won't need licensing because zigbee or IEEE 802.15.4 uses the free allocated frequency (e.i.2.4GHz).  It is almost similar to WiFi, however with low data rate. But the low power consumption is interesting.

i found this comparison chart in a paper:

if the purpose of the project is for personal, educational use there would be no need to be a member of the Zigbee Alliance...

but for commercial purposes, Zigbee Alliance requires membership of the company...

from zigbee.org Membership FAQ...

My company wants to develop ZigBee products for sale, does it need to be a member of the Alliance?

Yes. Membership in the ZigBee Alliance is required for any use of ZigBee intellectual property for commercial gain.

but I believe if you are using modules like the XBee which is certified by the Zigbee Alliance, you don't have to be a member of the Alliance...

MiWi and SimpliciTI are free alternatives to Zigbee (for commercial purposes)...

For Bluetooth, you could download the specifications for free.
You could use this on your products but you could not use the Bluetooth logo or mention Bluetooth word anywhere when it is not listed.  There is a testing, assessment and listing procedure and entails cost but is not as large as Zigbee.

This is maybe one of the reason why Zigbee does not really propagated unlike Bluetooth.  It is too restrictive and is seems a closed technology.  Using other Zigbee-like alternatives like MiWi is the way to go for hobby or non-mass produced products.

Microchip has MRF24J40 which is a Zigbee transceiver.  It is controlled via SPI and could be used with Zigbee stack.
See here http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/Devices.aspx?dDocName=en027752

It can be also be used with MiWi which is a free Zigbee-like alternative.
It is mesh networking but only up to 4 hops.  But having more 4 hops is very rare in an application.
