digital potentiometer and DAC question

what would be the disadvantage or advantage if i use a digital potentiometer as DAC instead of a regular DAC?

gusto ko rin malaman ito...

yung mga digital pot na nagagamit ko is hanggang 1mA lang ang maximum current na pwedeng idraw sa wiper ng pot kaya gumagamit pa ako ng op-amp voltage follower. kaya iniisip ko kung imamigrate ko yung ginagawa ko kasi andaming mapagpipilian na DAC at antataas pa ng resolutions (nakita ko kanina sa analog.com) or may alam pa kayong digital pot na serial interface (I2C or SPI)?

nang mag research ako sa google napakita ko na limitado pala ang resolution ng digital potentiometers. wala nga akong nakita na 12 bit  ???

hehehe.. kaya limitado ako sa 8-bit digital pot sa ginagawa kong project ngayon huhuhu...

buti na lang nakita ko itong thread na ito... hihingi nga pala ako ng samples sa maxim ;D ;D

dati andami niyan sa TI...napghalataan siguro na pinapakyaw kaya hindi na sila nagbibigay ng board...

meron dati 20W Buck Converter, 10W Class D Amplifier (for headphone and portable players), Power Multiplexer (for switching from battery to line power), madami pa, naiwan ko lang sa laboratory sa school... :'( ang nauwi ko lang yung Power Multiplexer...

hindi ako sigurado kung saan meron...lahat kasi nung sa akin, hingi lang...baka sa mga nagre-repair ng mga bagong amp, digital pot gamit ng mga yun, logarithmic taper...

It depends on the DAC you're comparing. If Sigma-Delta DAC vs D-pots, resolution and linearity  are the advantages of Sigma-Delta. For Flash DAC, most likely the same since they both uses semiconductor resistor ladder.

2^8 = 256 means 256 taps....
2^16 =  65536 means 65536, laki ng die nito and for sure mas mahal vs 16bit Sigma-Delta DAC.

resolution is one thing, isang disadvantage is hindi straightforward ang control(I2C or other serial protocol) unlike sa DAC pwede diretso from binary - analog(well, depende din sa dac na gagamitin).
