You need 3 toggle flipflops to do this and cascade into ripple counters. Input clock is feed to the first T input. The Q to the T input of the next flipflop and so on.

Like this:

CLK o---TQ---TQ---TQ---o divide by 8 output

Yes. You can convert D flipflops to T. Just connect the Q' to the D input.

Question lang: Can a 7490 decade counter set to reset at 8 do the trick too?   :)

Any binary counter does. Q2 will output divide by 8. But a decade counter (div by 10), may not.  I am not familiar of 7490 but if it can be modified as a binary counter (resets at power of 2 count). Then it will do divide by 8.

7490 is a BCD counter actually. The thought just occurred to me to use one because I'm planning to make a BCD display clock that displays time in BCD format using ordinary LEDs and 7490 is ideal. I'm just waiting for my local parts store to stock it. :D

I'll verify the div by 8  with a 7490 later at home.  ;D

Well it counts to 8 and resets but kailangan mo pa yatang gumamit ng gates across D0,D1,D2 para magamit ang 8th count na output.

Oh well. Live and learn  :D
