Your project is "excellent" indeed if your a student doing thesis-based related works, I suggests you to study "Algorithm's" .. and it is more meaningful, if you start working and mesmerizing "DSP" algorithms down to "Communication" algorithms.. The idea is to integrate this two.. I suggests also to explore "Matlab Software" to better comprehend "these" algorithms into practical applications..
There are available "Starter-Kits" from Alterra and Xilinx and it would be very helpful if you own one and work with it.
