ATmega8 3-Digit Up/Down Counter

Hi fellow AVRians here,....

Nice project to start with...
Next one could be a similar one, perhaps simpler hardware but
some twisting on the routines? It can be simply done less the
2 decoder IC's, just the seven segments, the Mega8 and the
3 PNP's...

I'm starting to study atmel avrs.  Yung mga config bits ba tulad ng sa pic na pwedeng defined sa code or separate fuse programming pa to sa prgramming s/w?
