I believed both are altogether will still be very useful in the future....

Halos lahat ay incline sa wireless, dahil messy ang wires. Radio sations ay kokonte nalang ang wired, yong power source nito at ang mismong station nalang. Also Cellphones i think is 99% wireless while cellsites ay yong source nalang at antenna nito. All their cutomers are wirelessly connected.

Wired is messy but wireless needs occasional change/charged batteries. Siguro parehas lang ang canvenience ng dalawa. Depende nalang siguro sa applications saan ito dapat na gagamitin.

Using electrical energy, may not accomplish a 100% wireless, siguro sa light technology in the future malamang maccomplish ito.

sa cellular network, malaki rin ang percentage ng wired infrastructure. pagpasok ng signal sa BTS, papasok 'yun sa wired network, for internet like 3G, wired T1 papunta sa data center. for calls, papasok pa rin sa MSC or Mobile Switching Center, katulad 'to ng CO ng wired telephone, at marami pa ring nakalatag na wires. nakapasok ako lately sa MSC ng isang telecom, kapag binuksan 'yung flooring, ga-hita pa rin 'yung kumpol ng wires, at dito pa rin dumadaan 'yung mga text at tawag natin.

small networks pa lang ang pure wireless, like Bluetooth. kahit sa WiFi, mas madalas pa ring kumonekta sa wired backend.

isa pa nga pala sa giangamit nating lahat galing sa Pilipinas, palabas sa internet, ang isa pa sa major wired backend, 'yung underwater cables, APCN, at APCN-2. roughly 3Tb/s ata ang total bandwidth nilang dalawa. medyo mahirap 'tong palitan ng wireless. remember nung nag-down 'to, last year lang ata, halos walang makagamit ng internet.

kaya para sa akin, neither will be obsolete. compliment sila sa isa't-isa.

IMHO, walang maoobsolete dyan, pareho silang may advantages at limitations. Bagay din sila magkasama.

Wireless - susceptible to noise, limited bandwidth, less secure than wired, many are limited to their line of sight
Wired - messy and expensive if transmission is over long distances, attenuation is greater

Wala pa yatang wireless(RF) na underwater ROV. Ang submarine walang wireless(except nagaangat sila ng antenna sa ibabaw ng tubig para lang makapagtransmit ng RF),

^ HF nakakatawid ng ocean, like Voice of America. kapag high bit rate, kailangan na ng satellite dahil masyadong malaki losses sa microwave kung long distance plus hindi na line of sight dahil sa curvature ng earth. mas magastos pa lalabas.

but with the advent of bluetooth and infrared, nagiging mas promising na rin ang future nang "wireless communications" sa mga short range especially in mobile and automotive technologies.. nowadays, there are a lot of researches both in academe and industry about wireless communications.. like the possible usage of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing techniques to mobile systems, multiple input-multiple output communications, cooperative wireless networks and radio systems, fourth\fifth generation standards, tera-wave communications, high-speed networks, wireless ad-hoc mobiles, etc..

"business" is main reason why there a "flood of researches and interests" in wireless communications especially in mobile technology.. that's why companies and government agencies like sony-ericsson, nokia, LG, Samsung, NASA, Department of Defense (Military), Cisco, Fluke Networks, ISP providers both with voice, video and data, Toyota and even giant software company microsoft invests a lot of money to their internal R&D teams that they hire a lot of scientists, professors, engineers, M.S./Ph.D holders with research interests in communication engineering to work with them..

but i think never ma-oobsolete ang "wire communications" because there are a lot of researches and companies invests heavy on it pa naman like the traditional telephony systems, automotives, computer communications, internal circuitry in electronics, etc..

like for example the flexray communication for automotives, EtherCAT communications for high-end industry, lightwave communications e.g., SONET for ATM's and telecommunications..
