hi guys, question lng, we plan to have our pic16f877 to communicate with our gsm module using rs232. Now according to the schematics of our gsm module, it uses max3386, we are also able to connect it to our pc and send msg using AT commands, concern lng po nmin is kelangan b max3386 din ang ilagay nmin sa pic or max232 would be ok? thanks!

just wanted to make it clear. ganito ba ang setup mo?

[MODEM  - - MAX3386 ]-----------MAX232------pic16F877?

kung oo, tama ka, dapat may max232. i looked-up max3386, it is a transceiver.  its output (or input) to/from outside world is an RS232 level. so yes, kailangan and MAX232. however, should you be operating at ~3.3V on you PIC circuitry, i suggest using MAX3232.
BTW, RS232 level are at +/-10V (to +/-12V). this levels are not appropriate for MCU's for obvious reason. ;D

okay, thanks! i think we'll be using 5v so max232 should be ok right :D
