Need Canon Digital Camera Power Supply
« on: July 04, 2010, 12:49:17 PM »
My digitial camera, actually my wife's digital camera, works fine on batteries, but it draws too much current and drains batteries, too quickly.

The power supply, suggested by Canon, requires 3.15 VDC at 2 Amps. I've supplied the required voltage at 3 Amps and the camera says, "Change Batteries" and powers off.  It does that when using the Flash; after the Flash, my power supply chokes as my camera is recharging its flash circuitry. Also, it does that when writing a picture (bigger than S) to the SD Card. It even does it when the LCD off and connected to the TV.

I can't find the Canon power supply block anywhere; not at SM Megamall, at least.

The camera doesn't have an overvoltage detector, however, a PSP power supply (5VDC @ 2Amps) does NOT have sufficient power to power up the camera. I'm guessing the limit on the camera is 6 VDC as the LCD becomes distorted, but stores pictures correctly before powering off, abruptly.

The idea is, I want to power this camera via commercial electrical power (Meralco, in this case), so I can take pictures of my projects without encountering a "Change Batteries" condition.

Can I build a power supply, from parts available locally? I purchase my electronic parts from Alexan in SM Megamall. My available Bench Power Supplies are variable 3-12 VDC @ 3 Amps and fixed 12 VDC @ 15 Amps. I've considered a voltage divider circuit, but interfacing a high current digital camera to the circuit causes unpredicable and unsatisfactory results.

what PS gamit mo? yung linear regulators lang? why not try using BUCK converters with MC34063...

Ok, my knowledge of building power supplies are kind of ancient... I'll look into MC34063.

Honestly, I am not sure what kind of power supply that is needed for my digital camera. All I know is that it requires 3.15VDC @ 2Amps.
