CHEAP USB-serial interface cable for our MCU projects!
« on: April 14, 2008, 10:51:02 PM »
I bought myself one of these dku-5 data cables from cdrking about 2 months ago for my old nokia phones namely a 6100 and a 6110.  Unfortunately, the cable wont work with my old nokia phones even though it is supposed to be a supported model of the cable.  Rather than  letting it go to waste, I've just decided to see the guts its made of.  Now I've found out why the cable wont work ... the cable wiring inside the phone connector is wrong as compared to the ones documented in pinouts.ru.  But anyway, I still haven't confirmed this yet if that is really the case.

Whats worth noticing is that the guts of the data cable is composed of a prolific pl-2303 usb-serial bridge.  I don't know what a usb-serial bridge means but when I checked the pl-2303 datasheet, it seems the rs232 signals outputs of the chip are 3.3V and the inputs accepts 3-5V levels.  This means that we can interface this chip directly to our mcu projects requiring serial interface and connect it to our pc via usb.  No rs232 electrical +15, -15V level translation is needed.  I've checked the connection from the tx/rx pin of the phone connector and its directly connected to the tx/rx pin of the chip.

Will post more info and pics later on after I try to succesfully hack this cable for our mcu project usage.

PS The dku-5 cable displayed in the cdrking website is not the actual cable ...it seems to be a picture of the original nokia dku-5 cable.

Meron namang USB to RS232 cable ang cdr-king mga p150 ang bili ko and i tried it to communicate with rs232 equipment to my usb laptop ok naman, prolific din ang chipset.

I have comm with it using 3 wire scheme (tx,rx,s.gnd) ng rs232 and its functioning well.
It's difficult to see the picture when you're inside the frame.

With the dku-5 cable, you don't need another max232 at the mcu side.

So here is the internal guts of the dku-5 cable.

Its composed of a pl2303hx serial-usb bridge,  a mc34063 dc-dc converter used to charge the phone via usb, and an unknown chip but most probably an 8 pin pic mcu.

What I did is I just took out the unknown mcu chip and associated components.  I'm also planning to take out the dc-dc converter chip but thought I'd leave it there in the meantime in case I need to generate voltage greater than 5V power (with some modifications like pic Vpp progamming voltage).

Actually, I plan to use this on a DIY  inchworm icd2 clone w/o the serial interface.

Its to turn on the charger so you could also charge the phone via usb.  There is an onboard mc34063 ic dc-dc converter that converts the usb 5.0V to the charging voltage of 6.1V for the phone.

the other 8 pins SOIC is an EEPROM 24xx series...
I wish it were.  I've been doing som research on this.  It's supposed to be a Nokia proprietary ACI ASIC.  There are only three connections to the chip ... pin 1 & 4 are connected and goes to Vout of the phone which is 2.8V.  Pin 6 goes to the ACI port of the phone and pins 7 & 8 are connected to ground. The ACI port is a bidirectional 1 kbit/s port so I guess there has to be some kind of mbus communication similar to the dlr3-p data cable for the 6210.  The phone is supposed to be communicating with this chip using some form of one-wire protocol and if the challenge-response communication is ok, Vout is enabled for the duration of the connection and the fbus tx/rx port are also enabled.

The 24xx chip has their VCC/VDD located at pin8 but for this chip, pin 8 is grounded.  Thats why I'm assuming this is an mcu.  An 8-pin pic mcu fits this profile.

ang mga murang (80 petot) nokia calbe ay:

question nga pala:
'pag kinabit ko na yung cable sa pc ko, makikita ba sya as another serial port (i.e. COM port)? ???

tried using virtual com as cellphone (MBUS/FBUS) interface..but never yet hack it and connect sa programmer like JDM...i think it will not generate enough programming voltage if gagamitin as is..pero if kulikutin ng konti..pwede... ;D

mukhang DKU-5 lang ang naiiba..

gagamitin ko sana sya as an alternative dun sa serial (COM) port & max3232.. (hindi as programmer)
maganda ang ganito kasi hindi sya messy..  :D

CA53, DKE-2, DKU-2, & CA101..
mura, P60..

installing the driver:

then the COM port:

nagmahal na yung sa cdrking (megamall),  :(
yun naman sa mga cp repair shops eh almost double ang presyo..  >:(
mahirap pang buksan kasi nandun mismo sa usb connector yung chip..
