DIY UTP TESTER....HELP...
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:14:02 PM »
hello po mg engineers...

im planning po to build a UTP tester na kaya pong idetect kung what type (ex. straight, crossover, rollover) and kung saang side ung sira or open in case na may sira...

penge po comments and suggestions..

tnx po sa mga magrereply...

@ TS

you can use a microcontroller for this. Connect the one side of the UTP cable (which has 4 solid wires) to 4 output pin of a microcontroller. Then the other end of the cable to 4 input pins.

Send output signals at the first end (that is, the 4 output pins) then receive it at the other end (4 input pins). You can then determine the type of connection cable (ST, CO, open, wrong connection, etc) via the mcu program, according to received signals in the input pins

if im not mistaken, sa mamahaling computer network analyzers ang may TDR-like function

Then all I need is continuity tester lang to check kung buo ang cable.  Ethernet uses 2 pairs  pin1&2 tapos pin3&6.  Yung pin4&5 usually gamit pang phone connection.

To get the distance of the cable break, pwede exploit yung capacitance ng twisted pair.  Since the capacitance is proportional to the cable length you can compute the physical distance or length of the cable from the tester.  Di ko lang sure kung pwede sa UTP cable but on coaxial cables pwede to, even a simple capacitance tester pwede.

example:

Cable with a capacitance rating of 10pf/ft
Kailangan mo makuha yung haba nya kaso naka spool.

Kabit mo yung capacitance tester on one end and get the reading, if you get say 1000pf. just divide it by 10 the you'll get 100 = 100 feet of cable.

Kung yung cable ay alam mo ang length, assuming 200 feet, tapos nakuha mo reading ay 100 then may putol yun malapit sa 100 foot mark from the tester.

I make anything from something to nothing

Available rin cya for three types of wire configuration

@eyis,

I think may nakita akong simple UTP cable tester using CD4017(?)... modify mo nalang cguro yung ckt for your own add-ons....
