a good details reference for understanding the concept and operation of fluorescent lamps. Troubleshooting is also included.

ngayon ko lang to nalaman (perhaps i was not paying much attention).

Did you know that there is a thermal protector for most of ballast below 20W? It opens due to overheating.
hehehehe :D
(honestly, ngayon ko lang to nalaman)

"When the lamp is off, the mercury/gas mixture is non-conductive. When power is first applied, a high voltage (several hundred volts) is needed to initiate the discharge. However, once this takes place, a much lower voltage - usually under 100 V for tubes under 30 watts, 100 to 175 volts for 30 watts or more - is needed to maintain it."

^ yeah! i also agree with you...
i am just trying to share something to ponder on. its just most if not all never paid attention of understanding how fluorescent lamp (classic or solid state driver) works. Most of us simply replace a blackened tube-ends if it does not turn-on.

I have to do a quick google to post again the advantages and disadvantages of solid state over ballast.

here's a very cool test... kung yung TV or monitor mo is CRT. (exept sa mga naka 120hz na monitor) wave your finger fast.  kapag nag putol putol daliri mo. get a better monitor or go lcd. same with FL bulbs. kapag nag fli-flicker bulb mo. kadalasan hindi mo mapapansin kasi mabilis yung refresh rate at 60hz but nakakastrain nang mata.

primitive na flicker checker device yung waving finger movement. hahahaha.

ballasts are there to limit the current flow to the flourescent tube. without the ballast, the tube would burn out fast due to the uncontrolled amount of current that will pass through it.

mga bos,
bakit ang dali masunog ng ballast ngayon, wala pa 6 months sira na, tapos damay pa yung flourescent tube, biglang liliwanag tapos mamatay, tapos amoy sunog, kaya tuloy dalawa papalitan ballast at yung flourescent tube. >:(

baka made in china? those thingies, notwithstanding workmanship, could be rated for 50Hz. put that in a 60Hz setting, plus undersized to the flourescent tube, plus the made in china - you have a recipe for disaster
