O, balik tayo dito....

For the controller, I had long ago picked a PIC to do the job.  But finding that the 'duino Pro Mini is a lot cheaper as is, and that I still have to make a PCB for the PIC micro, I thought of going on the 'duino route and learn how to program (do a sketch) a 'duino at the same time.  Maybe I'll do a separate thread on this application using an Arduino clone.

For starters, I chose a 25A SSR to switch the water heater.  Why?  Coz I measured the RMS current of my specific water heater to be around 10A.  And, the SSR switches at zero crossing of the line, meaning there is no current there when it switches, so there is no electrical noise generated.

Here is the SSR mounted on a heatsink:

A sufficient heatsink is necessary for the SSR.  In this application, it does get a little warm to the touch.

When I started this thread, this was the water heater I wanted to control:

This was what I wanted to do:

But this had no temperature control or feed back.

Wala kasing minerals yung distilled water.  Kailangan "madumi" yung tubig para daanan ng kuryente.

I mentioned the Bhagwan water heater made popular in the 60's.  Here is what its heating elements look like:

Made of Stainless Steel sheets.

The control was just like the old electric stoves, with selection of High, Medium and Low selecting sets of elements.

Here's what replaced our Bhagwan shower heater long ago and still in use.  The heater coils have been replaced or repaired I don't know how many times already.  They used to sell for P300, now they're around P650 just for the coil assembly alone.  Pagnapuputol, ini-stretch at dinuduksong ko lang.  Kaya mas mainit ngayon  :-\

The problem with this, nakakakuryente na pagpinipihit yung switch sa itaas  :o

This is a good candidate for the 'duino controller  :)

The problem with the Bhagwan and this Super Ducha Fame water heaters is that the secondary temperature control is by the amount of water going through.  The more water, the cooler it is.  The lesser the water, the warmer or hotter it gets.

To alleviate that problem, we need to use a feedback sensor for our controller in the form of a thermometric device.  Here I'm using a cheap Thermistor I bought in one of my girl-watching trips to eGizmo.  Sabi daw, it is a 12K Ohm NTC.  I measured it around 7K Ohms in my warm-room Lab.  Wala ako A/C dito, eh  :(

Here's how I put a casing on that thermistor:

Make sure there's ample enough epoxy inside the shell.
Thermal epoxy is best for this,,,, but too bad, it is very expensive and wala kasi ako.  JB Weld was good enough (I hope).

Now, one cheaper way of regulating water temperature without the use of an MCU is by turning ON and OFF the SSR or a hefty Relay with an adjustable astable circuit.

Again no MCU is needed- just use our trusted and reliable IC below:

dagdag lang ng konting asin un ok na .. the more the salt..the more conductivity. distilled pure un so wala conductivity.. o kung contaminated man mababa lang.

Parang ganun yung style. Pero ang totoo dimmer lang.

Kung dimmer lang, hindi zero crossing switching at maaaring meron RF interference o mga "clicks" pag nag-ON/OFF.
