My DIY transformer... ? ? ? Test Build Uli.
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:59:20 AM »
My DIY transformer using sir Tony's method.

Data:

Tounge Area = 2 x 3 7/16 inch = 6.875 in2

First time in using sir tony's method of computation, so expect some slight difference in value used.

I'm looking for 1000VA or 1KVA as test jig and isolation transformer fit enough to test several voltage tap. But I will try to have it on just 70%. Then it will up to 1428VA.

What will be my final Tounge core area( in inches using 2 inches width ) Stock = ?

Using VA = (5.58 A )2      formula.

Reaaranging :  A = √ VA / 5.58

                       = √1428VA / 5.58

                       = 6.77 in2

Value nearest is (in scale)  2 x 3 7/16 = 6.875 in2    where 2 = already given..

Sticking to 1428VA value.

Ip= 1428VA / 230V   = 6.2A

Np= 1750 / A = 1750 / 6.875 = 254.54 say 255 turns @230Vac

T/E = 255 / 230 = 1.11 turns  or 1.11 turns will create 1 volt.

where : 1750 is value use for deeco iron which is 0.5mm thickness.

Using 6.2A, looking to chart table of sir Tony, current carrying wire choice will be @ 0.5 (must have table). Which is #15 = 6.514A and  #16 = 5.165A, with a diameter of 1.45mm and 1.29mm.

Using #16, 6.514A X 230V = 1495.22VA and
Using #15, 5.165A X 230V = 1187.95VA or 1188VA

you got it interchanged...
are you making an isolation traffo or auto transformer?

remember that all these computations are at best estimates,
transformer power are all about heat,
depending on type of service you can get more or less...
for contentious service, i tend to be conservative,
for intermittent service of say less than an hour,
then you can use the traffo at higher power level than computed...

Here the E I to be use dimensions.

And here's the window space data.

Bobbin form used is 1mm thick cardboard. Outer side used 2 ply and single ply for the tounge.
Using #15 wire size data of 1.45mm(1.5mm diameter), since it is in mm all measurement is converted to mm rounding off some value.

But maybe sir tony can answer this.

Di pa kasi tapos ang pagbibigay ko ng data.  ;D  ;)

Base on this data. I only left with 24mm vertical height space and 34mm diagonal space. Using 1.5mm as diameter of #15 magnet wire. I can get 22 turns every layer, mathematically. And getting 255 turns,

Layers = 255turns / 22 turns = 11.59 or say 12 layers

so 1.5 x 12 = 18mm ; vertical space 24mm - 18mm = 6mm left for 255turns. CMIIW

Getting the length of wire ; 2 + 2 + 3 7/16 + 3 7/16(inch) = 10 7/8 or almost 11 inches per every turn(tongue).

Lenght of Wire = 255 turns ( 11 inches ) = 2805 inches. In foot 2805 / 12 = 233.75 feet

Giving 30% adjustment 233.75 x 1.3 =303.87feet

Base on table #15 is 104.4 feet / lb  therefore; 303.87 /104.4 = 2.91 lb  CMIIW or say 3 lb
( hay pinoy talaga hehe ;D )

Converting to kg unit :   3 lb x 1kg/2.2 lb = 1.36kg just for the primary side(estimated).

Converting

Teka nasaan na ba ako?

Ok I plan to use split bobbin for primary and secondary I forget to mention earlier, maybe. :)

Punta na ng hardware. Tanong ng #15 at #16 nila. Ito naman ang sukat in mm.
#15

#16

Mukhang malaki sa sukat sa table of chart para sa #15

Kaya gamitin ko yung #16 wire, pasok naman siya sa #15 data. Tingnan na lang kung magkakasya.  :)

Tada..

2-3mm space left(more or less). Medyo makapal rin yung bondpaper na nagamit on layering.

How much will be its no load amperage reading? No hint whatsoever, but maybe 2 or 1A fuse may do.

By the way here are data of Lx value on no core and with core. Ayun sa old meter
Lx =  6.694mH  Cx = 71.8pf                ;  Lx = 347mH    Cx = 3.8nf

R = 1.6ohm

Dun sa medyo bago meter
Lx = 1.17H      R = 1.7ohms

Bakit kaya ganun?

Here's the reading of primary winding. I'm using electrician ammeter with 1 decimal point, that's why it can't read lower than 100mA. So by doing this.

By using 22W / 220V = 0.1A or 100mA

Hintay ng kunti.

Secondary winding. Thinking of making it multitap up to 110V and also as an isolation transformer.

6V x 1.11 = 7 turns               32V = 36 turns                       70V = 78 turns
12 = 14 turns                       35V = 39 turns                       90V = 100 turns
14V = 16 turns                     40V = 45 turns                      110V = 122 turns
18V = 20 turns                     50V = 56 turns
25V = 25 turns                     55V = 61 turns
28V = 31 turns                     60V = 67 turns

Strikeout, masyadong malapit at ang hirap magbend ng wire kaya alis na lang muna.

dual bay pala yan....

as you increase the number of primary turns
the idle current goes down and vice versa,

however, the quality of the core gives watts lost per kg,
so depending on the weight of your core core losses add up.
this core loss is mostly eddy current and hysteresis losses
idle current component due to primary inductance add
vectorially to the other components....

so it is important to use good quality cores if you want the
wattage lost per kg of core to be lower...
